Hands at Work in Africa Internship Portfolio
Design
During my internship, I had the opportunity to join Hands at Work at a university outreach event. In order to prepare for the event, I created a banner that we could hang on our table. The banner (pictured below) featured our vision statement and all of the countries and communities we work in Africa. I also designed business cards for me, my supervisor and another coworker. During this event, I stood by the booth and talked with many students about what our organization stood for and the opportunities for trips and internships that we provide.
Writing
As a part of the Communications Team, I had several writing assignments. One is featured below. Since Hands at Work in Africa is celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, I was assigned to a project where I collected 12 stories and testimonies from Hands advocates, including current volunteers, African leaders, Primary Caregivers, Care Workers and children about the impact that God has done in their life through Hands at Work. I did not write these stories, but I took part in copyediting them so that they fit with the Hands voice.
Other writing assignments include an “Our Calling” piece and Q1 Community Narrative Reports. The “Our Calling” story is in progress. For this story, I interviewed a husband and wife who are currently international volunteers in Africa. The article will feature their story about how they became involved with Hands and what led them to making the decision to build their home there. The Q1 Reports give updates on community processes to partners across North America and the UK. Each one features a child’s story and involves research on the partner/advocate of that specific community. For this quarter, I wrote 15 stories for 15 communities across South Africa and Zimbabwe. The Q1 2022 Reports are still in the copyediting phase, but below is an example of a Q3 report I wrote in 2019.
Donor Relations & Fund Development
As a part of the Fund Development team, I have been trained and am currently working on the platform, Funraise, in order to enhance our donor relations strategy. I have essentially created the pages for Teams and Long-Term Volunteers for both the US and Canada Funraise homepages. These pages enable new volunteers and church partners to create fundraises on a Hands at Work affiliated platform so that any money raised goes directly to the team or volunteer’s monetary account on file with Hands. We are still in the process of making these pages, but below is an example of what one of these pages looks like.
