Internships

Communications & Fundraising Team Intern

As an intern for Hands at Work in Africa, I have the opportunity to work on both the North American Communications Team and the Fundraising & Development Team. Both teams have allowed me to exercise my verbal, written, and design skills as I have written community quarterly reports to update our advocates, created banners & business cards for our university outreach event, and designed fundraise pages to enhance our donor relations.

Solidarity NPO is a nonprofit organization that equips under-resourced Latino and Immigrant neighborhoods in Fullerton for community transformation. Solidarity seeks to break barriers, such as youth violence, the broken immigration system, education inequity and food and financial insecurity, and build relationships through initiatives like the after-school kids and teen programs, community programs for women in the two communities, an immigration service, and weekly food distributions.

As an intern, I work within two sectors of Solidarity: the Communications Team and the Teen Center (a mentorship program that serves as a safe place for youth in the Garnet community in Fullerton).

What I do as a Communications Intern:

  • Assist in rebranding Solidarity’s website and IG — write content to fill out sections in the website, organize/manage a social media calendar

  • Brainstorm new ways to engage Solidarity’s publics — create IGTV videos, design IG posts and flyers, create highlights & IG stories

  • Increase community awareness & participation — create a series on IG that engages the community by interviewing individuals and including them in a new social media campaign - “Meet Your Neighbor”

What I do as a Teen Center Lead:

  • Provide fun recreational opportunities that develop healthy relational bonds and increase confidence, trust, and a sense of belonging within the teens and leaders.

  • Offer academic support to teens who may not have a quiet place to study at home or the monetary support to participate in educational enrichment extracurriculars.

  • Create a space for teens to freely be themselves and build deep friendships with others in their neighborhood.

  • Plan outreach, service and community events to build relationships with the teens and those in their community

This internship built both my journalism and public relations skillsets as I developed my writing through blogging, gained experience in promoting a brand to potential clients and practiced social media management.

Design Lookbooks

As an intern for Leilani Weddings, I created design lookbooks for a variety of events, including weddings, estate grand openings and baby showers. They were designed to give clients a visualized concept of their event.

Other roles I had as an Assistant Coordinator included:

  • Social Media Management — managed the IG and Facebook for Santiago Estate to increase their follower base and establish a brand.

  • Venue & Client Outreach — joined the Lead Wedding Planner in client and venue meetings to discuss vision, pricing and packages.

  • Blog Writing — wrote blog posts for the Leilani Weddings website to give brides insight into all things wedding planning. See an example of my work here.

  • Day-Of Coordination — help set up the ceremony and reception space, assist the bride and bridesmaids, oversee vendors, and manage the timeline.
